PREHISTORIC FOREST

Kingsbeck has had woodland for as long as the estate has been in existence.
90% of the forests are planted woodland and the remaining 10% is much
older with the oldest trees forming part of a prehistoric woodland.

Our Forests

The plantation forestry is divided in to three parts, Amenity, Production and Biodiversity Woodland (designed to benefit the wildlife on the estate). Up until 2020 the Species mix was 50% Scots Pine; 30% European Larch; 10% Sitka Spruce 5% other conifers and 5% Mixed Broadleaves.

To make the forestry more robust in terms of disease we are now in the process of diversifying the species further and focussing the Production woodland into specific areas of the estate.

How We Maintain

The Forest?

In keeping with Scottish Forestry policy, the estate has developed a Long-Term Forestry Plan. The plan sets out our thinking on the management of our trees and timber within the estate over the next 10 years and the general development of our forestry over the next 20 years.

Our goal is to grow the highest quality timber possible and make it a resource that benefits the estate, the wider environment and local community.

To achieve this we employ a range of techniques which focus upon sustainable forest management and long term policy.

We also provide public access to the community to enable them to be able to enjoy this rich ecosystem.

How We Use The Wood?

The majority of the timber from the estate is sent to local sawmills and timber processors to support the local business community as much as possible. The estate also uses significant amounts of poorer quality timber for firewood or for heating within its business to assure there is no waste.
